Local CBS affiliate WTSP 10 Tampa Bay spoke to City of Lakeland traffic operations manager Angelo Rao recently about the City’s Intersection Collision Safety Program, or iCASP, which mitigates incidents from red-light running at intersections.
According to WTSP: "All new traffic light sensors installed alongside red light cameras at four of Lakeland’s most dangerous intersections can not only detect a vehicle coming but also use its speed and distance to calculate if the driver can stop in time."
The City achieves this using hybrid detection sensors and automated traffic signal performance measures (ATSPM) software from Iteris as part of iCASP. The program, which utilizes a combination of Iteris' Vantage Vector® Hybrid detection solution and the Iteris SPM™ system, is focused on reducing red-light related crashes at Lakeland's Memorial Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Street, Massachusetts Avenue, Bartow Road and North Crystal Lake Drive, as well as South Florida Avenue and Beacon Road.
Having finished an 18-month pilot program, the Florida Department of Transportation approved the technology's broader rollout. According to WTSP, after further studies, "the life-saving technology could soon be deployed at intersections everywhere".
In addition, you can read our full analysis of how Lakeland leveraged Iteris hardware and software to implement preventative measures at the intersection in this case study, as well as learn how you can achieve the goal of Vision Zero with Iteris’ Vision Zero intersection safety program.
