Smarter Work Zones Start Here: How ClearGuide is Leading the Way

CLEARGUIDE®, our real-time traffic analytics software, is changing the way agencies approach congestion and safety management around roadway construction. As opposed to traditional maintenance of traffic, ClearGuide analytics-based MOT avoids field equipment deployment. The probe data in ClearGuide captures pre-project baseline data. Both real-time and historic data are readily available with a click.
After any new issue is identified, agencies can skip field staff observations, as ClearGuide has already captured the issue and travel time impact to enable mitigation. With 24/7 monitoring, ClearGuide effectively replaces thousands of person-hours of operational support.
ClearGuide also helps improve the safety of construction workers by reducing staff time in-field. Workers no longer need to install, maintain and move temporary detection systems for projects. Agencies identify where the project schedule can be accelerated with minimal traffic impact—traffic conditions are updated every five minutes in ClearGuide.
New Feature: Dash Cam Images in ClearGuide
Iteris is introducing anonymized dashboard camera imagery into ClearGuide. The front-facing dash cam images are obtained from commercial fleets using on-vehicle cameras for their delivery and service trucks, offering a new view for MOT.
“Having dash cam data helps us better confirm closures and understand what is happening on the ground, something aerial imagery can’t always provide,” says Nathan Webster, PhD, senior traffic engineer at the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Agencies can now verify the legitimacy and cause of a slowdown with no fixed in-field cameras. The cause could be unexpected roadwork, weather, a vehicle crash, animal activity or other disruptive traffic events.
NCDOT recently performed pilot studies using dashboard camera imagery from Iteris’ data supplier. “Currently there is a lot of manual work to connect the received images to the exact closure locations. So we look forward to bringing this manual workflow into ClearGuide to address this,” Nathan says.
One of the most powerful use cases for these images is work zone detection and monitoring. Polling hundreds of engineers and traffic experts during a January 27, 2025 live webinar revealed that nearly a third of attendees listed work zone activity as their top priority when leveraging dash cam footage.
ClearGuide offers numerous solutions for work zone monitoring and maintenance of traffic. In-product alerts and reports analyze work zones, detours and associated delays. On-vehicle camera data is a powerful new tool from Iteris to help agencies visualize the work zone and deliver actionable information in ClearGuide.
Director of data science at Iteris, Masoud Hamedi, PhD, who worked on the NCDOT pilot studies, explains, “You draw a route [in ClearGuide] and then you pull the images along that route or click icons on the map to receive the [dash cam] images.” The images can be requested in as fine as one-second intervals for maximally accurate visual reporting.
Dash cam images in ClearGuide are already approved in the marketplace of The Eastern Transportation Coalition—a collective of 19 states along the I-95 corridor that assure the quality of data sets for use in traffic analytics.
