Interview: Getting to Know Pete Costello
The Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) recently caught up with Iteris associate vice president, Transportation Systems, Pete Costello.
Here is the interview in full:
Pete Costello is associate vice president at Iteris, Inc. He has been in transportation demand management (TDM) for almost 20 years and believes in telematics, smart cities, and ACT. We asked him for his views on ACT and the future of TDM.
1. How did you get involved in TDM?
I have been involved with intelligent transportation systems (ITS) for almost 20 years as I started on staff at ITS America on June 1, 1998. At ITS America, I was responsible for managing its work in many ITS disciplines, including traveler and weather information, traffic management, public transportation, telematics (what we called connected vehicles back then) and rural ITS. Subsequently, my career has focused on traveler information, traffic data, performance measures and analytics.
2. How did you get involved in ACT?
I spoke at an ACT conference in Anaheim on 511 about a decade ago and have followed the work ACT is doing for many years. I am leading Iteris’ Smart City Technical Advisory Committee and I think ACT brings a unique perspective to smart cities.
3. What do you see as the future of TDM? Any specific challenges?
My vision for the future is that mobility as a service will help achieve a better, safer and more efficient use of the transportation network. To support this outcome I serve as the founder and manager of the Transportation Mobility as a Service group on LinkedIn to share information on this important topic with over 725 transportation professionals. To achieve this vision, the challenges are many, and I look forward to collaborating with the ACT membership on moving forward.
