ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage Addresses Speeding Problems in Residential Areas

A new tier of probe data-based coverage within ClearGuide® Safety now empowers communities nationwide with evidence-based analytics to deploy speeding countermeasures on local side streets.

Powered by Iteris ClearData®, ClearGuide Safety offers analysis from a unique dataset calibrated to expose roadways with high speeding, the number one cause of traffic fatalities and traffic-related injuries in the U.S. ClearGuide Safety has now expanded this data coverage to include smaller roads in residential areas where speeding too often goes dangerously undetected.

ClearGuide Safety is now available in two tiers:

  • ClearGuide Safety Major Roads, providing speeding hotspot data for freeways and arterials.
  • ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage, providing side street and local residential speeding data, in addition to the highway and arterial coverage available in the Major Roads tier.
  • The Expanded Coverage option includes the same valuable insights offered for arterials, now for smaller roads for which data was previously lacking.
  • As with Major Roads, agencies determine whether they see when speeds have exceeded the speed limit, or are exceeding mph thresholds that are fully customizable.
  • ClearGuide Safety requires no field hardware; it is reliant upon ClearData machine learning models that carefully analyze vast amounts of vehicle probe data. Across the U.S. and in Canada, public safety officials, safety engineers, planners, law enforcement, and agencies interested in SS4A and other IIJA-funded opportunities now have another powerful tool in the ClearGuide traffic analytics toolbox. The add-on data set offers increased assurance that cities and counties can counter speeding and stay safe, including in rural and underserved communities where public safety is increasingly a federal priority.

Like ClearGuide Safety Major Roads, ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage:

  • Helps agencies anticipate the adverse effects of speeding before they happen
  • Eliminates limited, static, and cost-prohibitive radar data collection
  • Removes field guesswork to help direct enforcement efforts to places where speeding is actually a problem
  • Requires no hardware
  • Provides 24/7/365 up-to-date data collection
  • Enables data-driven decisions in order to:
    • Save time, money, and staff resources
    • Submit more favorable, evidence-based safety grant applications
    • Justify budgets and improve government accountability
    • Understand countermeasure effectiveness with detail and precision

Additionally, ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage:

  • Vastly extends the data coverage to include side streets
  • Allows agencies to address local community speeding complaints
  • Helps improve the safety of residential populations, including pedestrians and cyclists ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage can produce reports offering important insights into the hours and days when speeding occurs most on smaller, residential routes. ClearGuide Safety Major Roads and Expanded Coverage:

  • Are probe data-based solutions powered by Iteris ClearData
  • Are fully integrated into the ClearGuide software platform
  • Identify, visualize, and quantify speeding problems across the roadway network and along specific routes
  • Cover highways and arterials
  • Offer speeding percentiles along routes
  • Compare speeding to speed limit or to custom speed thresholds
  • Identify speeding hotspots
  • Rank speeding hotspots
  • Provide detailed speeding trend reports for corridors
  • Export data
  • Use an improved algorithm that now adjusts for the natural slowdown caused by traffic signal approach

ClearGuide Safety Expanded coverage also features:

  • Broader, more granular data coverage
  • Residential road coverage across the U.S. and Canada
  • Optional integration of Vantage PedSafe pedestrian safety system data*

*Works in conjunction with Iteris Vantage PedSafe sensors.

Leveraging Vantage PedSafe

Vantage PedSafe is Iteris’ new pedestrian-specific radar sensor system designed to protect vulnerable road users with advanced detection, real-time analytics, and integrated safety applications.

The ability to ingest and visualize this data is yet another feature distinguishing ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage. The data appears on new heat maps and in pedestrian-count and pedestrian-speed reports.

The combined features of PedSafe and Expanded Coverage enable visibility into pedestrian behavior at the intersection previously unseen: PedSafe is unique within the ITS sector because it tracks pedestrian behavior from curb to curb. Other systems detect pedestrian crossings only at the halfway point. Additionally, pedestrian speed-of-crossing data is crucial for understanding and adjusting signal timing.

Identify and rank speeding hotspots

ClearGuide Safety users can customize the speeding map to pull data filtered by weekday, time of day, and roadway type. Choose views that show a percentage of vehicles over the speed limit or over a user-defined speed, by mph thresholds you set.

Identify where speeding is increasing

The map also has a comparison model to show where speeding behavior has changed the most between two user-selected date ranges. This feature can highlight new speeding problems or show where a countermeasure has successfully decreased speeding. Perform in-depth route analysis

ClearGuide Safety provides access to a variety of charts and graphics that let users drill into questions like: where and when is speeding happening on the route; is it getting worse or better over time; and are implemented countermeasures having the desired impact?

A new arterial safety assessment tool includes speeding route reports for corridors by calculating weighted average safety metrics along specific roads. Speeding trends can be analyzed for any user-defined corridor.

Partner with law enforcement to prioritize surveillance

The residential coverage offered in the ClearGuide Safety Expanded Coverage tier is particularly well-suited for transportation agency-law enforcement partnership.

Speed enforcement is generally planned with only an anecdotal assessment of where speeding is happening. With ClearGuide Safety, agencies can share access to continuously collected data and robust analytics to help law enforcement quickly and proactively identify speeding hotspots.

Some of the most dangerous and disruptive speeding incidents occur in residential areas, where enforcement resources may be scarce, and at the same time large numbers of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users move about. Speeding is also a noise nuisance uniquely disruptive to quality of life in neighborhoods comprised mainly of residences.

Expanded Coverage provides heat maps that show not only where along residential routes speeding is most prevalent, but also what times of day and days of the week for more effective enforcement. Maps comparing changes over time then provide tangible means to measure countermeasure effectiveness.
